Our History

In 1989, Larry Kroff opened The Bookie’s Paperbacks and More on the corner of 103rd and Western Ave. His mission was to supply the south side of Chicago with gently used books, providing a cozy, labyrinthine storefront with books from every genre imaginable!

When Larry passed on the mantle to long-time employee Allison Platt in 2006, she began stocking more and more new books as well as brightening up the aesthetic of the store. Its clientele nearly doubled as the store underwent more modern changes, and Bookie’s became a household name for south side residents.

Allison sold the store to the current owner, Keith Lewis, in 2015. As a former high school English teacher, Keith knew the importance of the written word and embraced his new career with passion and integrity. He initiated his own changes, including more involvement in the indie bookselling scene, more new books, and a brand-new computerized system.

On July 1st, 2017, Keith initiated one of his biggest changes yet: he moved the business from the original location to right around the corner at 10324 S. Western Ave to a double storefront! With its almost tripled square footage and fully ADA-compliant space, Bookie’s is now sleek, modernized, bright, and spacious!

But that’s not all — Keith opened a second Bookie’s location in the beautiful downtown area of Homewood, IL at 2015 Ridge Road!
